Portable Bluetooth Speaker Got Wet? How to Dry It Out and Restore the Sound
Waterproof-rated speakers still sound terrible with water in the driver. Here is the recovery routine, and the battery risk nobody mentions.
Waterproof does not mean water-free
Most portable speakers sold today carry an IPX7 rating, meaning they survive thirty minutes under a metre of fresh water. What that rating protects is the electronics inside the sealed cavity — the battery, the amplifier, the Bluetooth radio. It says nothing at all about the driver face, the fabric grille, or the passive radiators on the ends, all of which sit outside the seal and are designed to get wet.
So the speaker still works after the pool, but it sounds terrible. The bass is gone, the top end is smeared, and everything is quieter. That is water sitting on the cone and soaking the acoustic fabric, adding mass to parts that need to be light to move. It is not damage, and it clears.
The recovery is the same principle used on phones — drive the driver at a low frequency and let its own motion shed the water — but the execution differs because these are much larger drivers with far more excursion. Details on why low frequencies do the work are in the frequency guide.
First moves, in order
Speed matters less here than on a phone, but the charging port is still the danger point and the reason most wet speakers actually die.
- Power it off and shake the water out. Hold it firmly, grille facing down, and shake with real force — these units are built for it, and shaking clears more from a large driver than it ever does from a phone.
- Open the port flap and drain it. That little rubber cover traps a pocket of water that will sit against the USB-C pins indefinitely if you leave it closed.
- Do not charge it. Not for at least six hours, and not until the port is visibly and completely dry. Charging a wet port is what turns a fine speaker into a dead one.
- Blot the fabric grille with a towel, pressing rather than wiping. Acoustic mesh holds water like a sponge and drips it back onto the cone for hours.
- Stand it grille-down on a dry towel in a ventilated room, and leave it there while you wait.
- If it went into sea water or a chlorinated pool, rinse the exterior with clean fresh water first. Salt and chlorine residue corrodes the grille and the port contacts as it dries.
Running a low-frequency clearing cycle
Once the outside is dry and the port has had a few hours, power the speaker on and pair it. Play the 165 Hz cleaning tone from your phone at high volume through the speaker, with the driver facing downward so anything shed falls away rather than back into the cone. Run thirty seconds, stop, wipe the grille, repeat.
Two adjustments matter for portable speakers specifically. First, do not go straight to the maximum volume the unit can produce — big drivers at high excursion and low frequency can bottom out against the magnet assembly, and that is real mechanical damage. Around seventy percent is plenty, and the excursion is already far larger than any phone can manage. Second, watch the passive radiators, the flat plates on the ends that move visibly with the bass. If water is trapped behind one, you will see it pumping unevenly, and a few cycles usually clears it.
Between cycles, sweep upward through 300 Hz and 800 Hz using the tone generator. Larger cones hold water in different places than a phone diaphragm does, and the higher steps shake loose the film that clings to the surround.
The battery risk nobody talks about
The failure mode that actually destroys portable speakers is not the driver. It is a lithium cell that took on moisture through a compromised seal. Watch for three warning signs: a case that feels warm when the speaker is idle, a swelling or bulging that makes the unit rock on a flat table, or any chemical smell. Any of these means you stop, move the unit away from anything flammable, do not charge it, and dispose of it at a battery recycling point.
This matters more for older units. IP seals age — the gaskets compress, the port flap loses its grip, and a five-year-old speaker rated IPX7 from the factory is not IPX7 today. Sound that stays wrong after drying
Give it a full 24 hours before you judge. Acoustic fabric holds moisture long after the driver looks dry, and a speaker that sounded ruined in the evening is often completely normal the next morning.
If it is still wrong the next day, work through the possibilities. Try a different source device and a wired input if the unit has one — an intermittent Bluetooth link produces dropouts and compression artefacts that sound like driver damage. Check whether the manufacturer's app has an EQ preset that got changed. Then reset the speaker to factory settings, which clears corrupted pairing and DSP state more often than you would think.
Genuine driver damage sounds specific: a persistent buzz on bass notes, a scraping quality as the coil rubs, or complete silence from one driver in a stereo pair. Corrosion on the internal contacts, common after salt water, produces intermittent cutting out that comes and goes with temperature. Neither is a cleaning problem.
Shower speakers, beach speakers and daily care
Speakers that live in wet environments need a routine, not a rescue. Rinse a beach speaker with fresh water at the end of the day, every day — sand and salt together abrade the grille and pack into the driver surround. Let a shower speaker dry face-down between uses instead of leaving it hanging where water pools in the cone. Keep the port flap firmly closed whenever the unit is not charging, and check the rubber for cracks every few months.
One more habit worth having: run a short low-frequency cycle after any real soaking, even when it sounds fine. Pushing a droplet out before it dries and leaves mineral deposits on the cone takes thirty seconds. Removing the deposits later is not possible.
