How to Eject Water From an iPhone Speaker (Without Buying Anything)

Why iPhones have no built-in water eject button, how the 165 Hz tone clears the earpiece and bottom firing driver, and how long to keep going before you stop.

Why your iPhone has no water eject button

Apple Watch has a dedicated Water Lock that flings water out of the speaker with a low tone when you turn the crown. The iPhone does not, and that surprises a lot of people the first time they pull a wet phone out of a pool. iPhones from the XR onward carry an IP67 or IP68 rating, so Apple's position is that the device survives the dunk — but surviving is not the same as sounding right afterwards. A droplet trapped behind the speaker mesh is a purely acoustic problem, and Apple simply never shipped a consumer-facing fix for it.

That gap is why browser-based tools exist. The physics is not complicated: play a low frequency at high amplitude through the driver, and the diaphragm's own excursion pumps liquid back out through the grille. You do not need an app, a Shortcut, or a paid download. Anything that plays audio at full volume through the correct speaker can do the job — what actually matters is technique, and that is what most people get wrong.

Work out which speaker is wet first

Every modern iPhone has two audio outputs that can hold water, and they behave very differently. The bottom-firing driver sits behind the grille next to the Lightning or USB-C port and does most of the work for music and speakerphone. The earpiece slot above the display doubles as the second stereo channel. Water in the earpiece is more common than people expect because the slot is narrow, faces upward when the phone lies on a table, and drains badly.

Test them separately before you start. Play a track and cup your hand over the bottom grille — if the sound stays clear, the top speaker is fine and the bottom one is the problem, and vice versa. The stereo channel tester on the home page does the same job more precisely by driving left and right independently, so you can hear exactly which side is muffled.

Knowing which driver is affected changes how you hold the phone. A bottom speaker clears best with the phone upright, port facing straight down. An earpiece clears best with the phone tilted face-down at roughly forty-five degrees so the slot drains toward the display edge rather than back into the chassis.

The cleaning run, step by step

Take the case off before anything else. Silicone and leather cases hold a surprising amount of water directly against the bottom grille, and every cycle you run will pull some of it straight back in. Dry the outside of the phone with a lint-free cloth, paying particular attention to the mesh itself — blot, never rub, because rubbing drives surface water inward through the openings.

  • Set the media volume to maximum. Not eighty percent — maximum. Ejection depends on the diaphragm reaching its full excursion, and at reduced volume the droplets just jiggle in place.
  • Turn off Bluetooth so the tone plays through the phone speaker rather than a nearby pair of AirPods or a car system.
  • Hold or prop the phone so the wet speaker faces down, resting on a dry microfibre cloth that can absorb whatever comes out.
  • Run a 30 second cycle at 165 Hz. Watch the grille — beads of water usually appear within the first fifteen seconds.
  • Stop, wipe the grille dry, then run a second cycle. Wiping between runs matters, because a droplet sitting on the outside of the mesh gets sucked back in on the negative pressure phase of the next cycle.
  • If audio is better but still slightly dull after three cycles, switch to the frequency sweep so the tool steps through 165 Hz, 210 Hz, 300 Hz and 800 Hz.

What about the Water Eject Siri Shortcut?

The popular Water Eject shortcut circulating on iOS is a wrapper around exactly the same idea: it plays a low frequency sound file at high volume for a fixed duration. It works, and there is nothing wrong with using it. The two practical downsides are that installing shortcuts from untrusted sources is a habit worth avoiding, and that most versions play a single fixed tone with no way to sweep frequencies or repeat on demand.

A browser tool sidesteps both issues. Nothing is installed, nothing has permission to anything, and you can vary the frequency when the fixed tone plateaus. If you already have the shortcut and it clears your speaker in two runs, keep using it — the goal is a dry driver, not brand loyalty to a method.

Drying the moisture the tone cannot push out

Ejection removes bulk liquid. It does not remove the humid air left behind inside the speaker chamber, and that residual moisture is what makes audio sound slightly veiled for a day or two after an otherwise successful rescue. The fix is patience and airflow, not heat.

Stand the phone upright in a well-ventilated spot, speaker facing down, and leave it for four to six hours. A small fan aimed across — not directly at — the grille roughly halves that time by keeping dry air moving over the openings. Apple explicitly recommends against external heat sources, and they are right: hairdryers and radiators can warp adhesive seals and push moisture deeper into the chassis, turning a recoverable problem into a repair bill.

Skip the rice. It is folklore. Rice absorbs ambient humidity far too slowly to matter, and dust and starch particles from the grains find their way into ports and grilles where they cause their own problems. Silica gel packets in a sealed container genuinely do work if you have enough of them, but plain airflow gets you most of the way for free.

If the sound is still wrong after 24 hours

At this point you are no longer dealing with water, so stop running cycles — repeated high-amplitude tones on a dry driver are pointless. Work through the causes in order of likelihood. Debris is first: pocket lint and dust compact into the mesh over months and cause exactly the same muffling as liquid. Software is second, and it is more common than people assume. Check that no EQ preset is active in Settings, that Bluetooth is not routing audio elsewhere, and that a call-audio setting has not been changed. Hardware is last. Persistent crackling, distortion that gets worse at volume, or a channel that is completely silent points at a damaged voice coil or a corroded connector — particularly if the liquid involved was salt water, which keeps corroding long after the device looks dry. That is a service centre job, and delaying makes it worse. If your phone was submerged rather than splashed, read the full water damage rescue sequence before you decide.

Preventing the next one

IP67 and IP68 ratings are earned in a laboratory with fresh water, at a fixed depth, for thirty minutes, on a factory-new device. Real-world seals degrade with every drop, temperature cycle and screen replacement, and the rating explicitly excludes pool chlorine, sea water and hot showers, where steam pressure defeats the gaskets entirely. Treat the rating as insurance against accidents, not permission for swimming.

The habits that actually help are unglamorous: dry the phone properly before charging, avoid the poolside table, and clear the grille with a soft dry brush every few weeks so debris never gets a chance to compact. There is more on ratings and long-term care in IP ratings and speaker maintenance.
