How to Clean AirPods and Earbud Speakers Safely (Wax, Sweat and Water)
Earbuds go quiet because of wax, not faults. Here is how to clean the mesh without pushing debris into a driver the size of a lentil.
One earbud quieter than the other is almost never a fault
It is the single most common earbud complaint, and the cause is nearly always the same: earwax has built up on the mesh in front of the driver. Wax accumulation is asymmetric because most people produce more in one ear, which is exactly why one side goes quiet first and people conclude that side has failed.
The scale involved makes this severe. An earbud driver is a few millimetres across, and the mesh in front of it has openings measured in tens of microns. A film of wax you can barely see blocks a meaningful percentage of the output area, and because wax is soft and sticky, it fills the openings rather than sitting on top of them. Volume drops, the top end disappears first, and everything sounds like it is behind a hand.
Confirm it before you clean. Play the stereo channel tester and listen to left and right in turn. A clear volume difference at the same tone, with both sides otherwise producing clean sound, is the classic wax signature. Crackling or distortion on one side is a different problem and points at the driver.
The safe cleaning method
Work dry, work gently, and always work with the earbud pointing downward so anything you dislodge falls out under gravity rather than dropping into the driver. Give yourself good light and ten unhurried minutes.
- Remove the silicone tips first if your buds have them. Wash the tips separately in warm soapy water, dry them completely, and set them aside — do not refit damp tips.
- Brush the mesh with a soft dry brush. A clean, dry, soft-bristled toothbrush is ideal. Brush across the surface with the bud facing down; never press in.
- Lift the loosened debris with painter's tack or poster putty pressed lightly against the mesh and pulled straight off. Repeat with a fresh clean piece each time. This is the safest way to remove compacted wax from mesh.
- For the crevice around the mesh, use a wooden toothpick very lightly, or a soft dry cotton bud rolled around the edge. Never insert anything into the mesh itself.
- If wax is genuinely hardened, breathe warm air onto the mesh briefly to soften it, then brush again. Warm breath and patience, not heat and force.
- Clean the charging case contacts with a dry cotton bud. Debris in the case wells transfers straight back onto the buds and also stops them charging reliably.
What will destroy your earbuds
Every method that fails does so for the same reason: it drives debris or liquid inward through a mesh designed to keep both out. Never use a pin, a needle, a staple or a paperclip — puncturing the mesh permanently changes the acoustic behaviour, and touching the diaphragm behind it ends the driver.
Never use compressed air. The blast pressure at close range on a driver that small can tear the diaphragm outright, and it pushes surface wax through the mesh instead of removing it. Never submerge earbuds or run them under a tap, even ones with an IPX rating — those ratings cover sweat and rain resistance on the outside, not a driver cavity being flooded.
Alcohol and cleaning solutions are the last thing to avoid. Isopropyl dissolves the adhesive holding mesh assemblies together and strips the coating on silicone tips. If you want to disinfect, a barely-damp cloth on the plastic body only, never on the mesh, and never with liquid pooling anywhere.
Sweat, rain and the occasional wash cycle
Sweat is worse than water. It carries salt, and salt crystallises on contacts and mesh as it dries, leaving a conductive residue that keeps drawing in moisture from the air. If you train in your buds, wipe them dry with a cloth after every session — not because they will die today, but because six months of dried salt is what kills the charging contacts.
For genuine water exposure, dry them face-down on a towel in a ventilated room for a full 24 hours before you charge them. Do not put them back in the case while damp; the case is a sealed humid box and holds moisture against the contacts. Do not use heat. If your buds took a trip through a washing machine, the odds are poor but not zero — dry for 48 hours before attempting to charge, and expect the case to be the component that failed.
A low-frequency ejection tone, the method that works so well for phone speakers and Bluetooth speakers, is far less useful here. The drivers are too small and their excursion too limited to pump liquid through the mesh, and running them hard while wet risks the coil. Dry earbuds passively and clean them mechanically.
When cleaning does not restore the volume
Check the software layer before concluding hardware. On iOS, the accessibility audio balance slider sits in Settings, Accessibility, Audio & Visual, and a slider nudged toward one side reproduces the exact symptom you are chasing. Check it even if you never touched it — it is easy to move accidentally in the Control Centre.
Then unpair the buds completely, forget the device, reset the buds using the case button, and pair fresh. Firmware and pairing state corruption produces genuinely strange volume behaviour that no amount of cleaning will fix.
If both of those are clean and one bud is still quiet, the wax has probably reached the inner acoustic mesh rather than the outer one, and that is not user-serviceable. Apple and most manufacturers replace individual buds at a fraction of the cost of a new set — the same route applies for a driver that crackles, distorts or has gone silent.
A maintenance routine that actually gets done
Weekly, brush the mesh dry for thirty seconds per bud. Monthly, wash the silicone tips and clean the case wells. That is the entire routine, and it prevents nearly every quiet-earbud complaint people bring to a repair counter.
Two habits help as much as cleaning does. Do not put buds back in the case while they are damp with sweat, and do not keep them loose in a pocket with keys and lint — the mesh acts as a lint magnet, and pocket debris is second only to wax as a cause of muffled buds.
