What is Speaker Cleaner?

Speaker Cleaner is a free browser tool that plays precisely engineered low frequency tones through your phone, tablet, laptop or Bluetooth speaker to physically push trapped water and dust out of the speaker grille. It is the same principle Apple Watch uses for its water eject feature, rebuilt with the Web Audio API so any device with a browser can use it.

Water trapped against a speaker diaphragm is held in place by surface tension. A droplet clinging inside a 1 mm mesh behaves like a tiny elastic membrane, and it will not fall out on its own. When the diaphragm oscillates at 165 Hz, it displaces air 165 times per second, generating pressure pulses that exceed the droplet's surface tension. The droplet deforms, detaches from the mesh, and gravity does the rest — which is why you always point the speaker downward.

The Physics & Technology

  • Low band (60–200 Hz) — long wavelengths move the largest volume of air. Maximum cone excursion produces the mechanical shove that breaks droplet adhesion and shakes loose heavy lint.
  • Mid band (200–2,000 Hz) — the automatic sweep through 210 Hz, 300 Hz and 800 Hz targets progressively smaller droplets, because each droplet size has its own resonant response.
  • High band (4–12 kHz) — rapid, low-amplitude vibration shakes fine dust particles off the protective mesh without stressing the driver.
  • 5 Hz modulation — an LFO pulses the amplitude and frequency so the wave arrives in bursts rather than a steady tone. Pulsed pressure is far better at dislodging a stuck droplet than constant pressure.

The First Ten Minutes After a Spill

Most speakers that never recover were not killed by the water — they were killed by what happened in the ten minutes afterwards. Work through this order.

STEP 01

Get it out of the liquid

Every extra second underwater is more liquid past the gasket. Lift the device straight up, keep the ports facing down and do not tilt it back and forth.

Power down, don't charge

Skip the heat

Hairdryers, radiators and sunlight push warm damp air deeper inside and soften the adhesive holding the display and speaker assembly together.

Silica gel, not rice

Two or three silica sachets in a sealed bag drop the humidity around the device fast. Rice works slower than an open window and sheds starch into the grille.

Run the eject cycle

Once the exterior is dry, point the speaker down and run a 165 Hz cycle. Repeat two or three times, drying the grille between runs.

Give it a night
