Earpiece Speaker Cleaner: Fix Quiet Calls
If callers sound faint but music is fine, the problem is usually the small earpiece speaker at the top of your phone. Here is how to clear water, dust and grime from it.
How to clean the earpiece speaker with sound
On most modern phones (iPhone 7 and later, most Samsung Galaxy and Pixel models), the earpiece doubles as the second stereo speaker, so it plays media as well as calls. That means the cleaner above can reach it:
- Turn the volume to maximum and remove any screen protector edge that covers the top slot.
- Hold the phone so the top edge points down.
- Run Water Eject for water, or Deep Clean for dust. You should feel a gentle vibration near the top of the screen.
- Confirm with the left/right speaker test in landscape — one side is the earpiece.
If your phone has a mono earpiece that only plays during calls, put the phone on speaker mode during a call to a voicemail line, or use the manual cleaning steps below.
Clean skin oil and makeup from the earpiece
- Power the phone off.
- Brush the earpiece slot gently with a soft, dry toothbrush, moving sideways along the slot.
- For greasy build-up, dip the toothbrush tip in a little 70% isopropyl alcohol, tap off the excess so it is barely damp, and brush again. Never drip liquid into the slot.
- Lift remaining dust with a piece of painter’s tape or Blu Tack.
- Let it dry for 10 minutes before turning the phone on.
Still can’t hear callers? Check these settings
- Call volume — press volume up during a call; call volume is separate from media volume.
- Bluetooth — calls may be routing to earbuds or a car. Turn Bluetooth off and test.
- iPhone: Settings → Accessibility → Audio/Visual — check Phone Noise Cancellation and balance. Also check Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Call Audio Routing is set to Automatic.
- Android: turn off “Adapt sound”/hearing enhancements, and check Accessibility → Hearing → balance.
- Screen protector or case covering the slot.

Frequently asked questions
Why can I hear music but not callers?
Music plays through the bottom speaker, calls through the top earpiece. A clogged or wet earpiece, a low call-volume setting or Bluetooth routing are the usual reasons.
Can I use the water eject sound for the earpiece?
Yes, on phones where the earpiece also acts as a stereo speaker. Point the top of the phone down while it plays.
Is alcohol safe for cleaning a phone speaker?
A barely-damp toothbrush with 70% isopropyl alcohol is fine for removing grease from the outside of the grille. Never pour or drip liquid into the opening.
