Headphone Test: Left, Right, Stereo & Phase
Make sure your headphones, earbuds or AirPods play the right sound in the right ear — and that both drivers are wired in phase.
How to test your headphones
- Put your headphones on with L on your left ear. Set the volume low.
- Tap Left, then Right. Each sound should appear only in the matching ear.
- Tap Center. The sound should appear in the middle of your head.
- Run the Pan sweep — the tone should glide smoothly between your ears with no gaps or drop-outs.
- Finally, compare In phase and Out of phase.
What is the headphone phase (polarity) test?
Each driver pushes air outward when the signal is positive. If one earcup is wired backwards, the two drivers move in opposite directions. With the in-phase tone, a correctly wired pair sounds solid and centered. The out-of-phase tone should sound wide, hollow and hard to locate. If both buttons sound the same — or “in phase” sounds hollow — one side is probably wired in reverse, which also weakens bass.
Common headphone problems and fixes
- Sound in one ear only — check that mono audio and balance are centered, re-seat the jack, and try another device. For Bluetooth earbuds, reset and re-pair both buds.
- One AirPod or earbud is quieter — usually earwax or dust on the mesh. See how to clean AirPods safely, then retest — or work through why are my AirPods so quiet. If they got wet, use the AirPods water eject tool.
- Crackling when you move the cable — a damaged wire near the plug or earcup.
- Thin, bass-less sound — poor seal (try larger ear tips) or a polarity problem.
Check bass and treble too
Use the bass test to see how low your headphones reach (good ones play down to 20–30 Hz) and the frequency sweep test to check the full range. Keep the volume low for high frequencies.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my headphones are on the right way?
Tap Left in the test. If you hear it in your left ear, they are correct. If you hear it on the right, swap them around.
Why does sound only come out of one earbud?
The other bud may be disconnected, out of battery, blocked with wax, or set to mono/balance. Reset and re-pair, clean the mesh, and check your accessibility audio settings.
Can I test AirPods with this?
Yes. Connect your AirPods, open this page and use the Left/Right buttons. It also works with Galaxy Buds, Sony, Bose, Beats and wired headphones.
