Laptop Speaker Cleaner: Fix Muffled Laptop Sound
Laptop speakers sit under grilles that collect dust, crumbs and the occasional coffee splash. Run the cleaner below, then work through the settings checklist to get clear sound back.
How to clean laptop speakers with sound
- Close other apps that play audio and turn the system volume to maximum.
- Find your speakers: on most Windows laptops they fire down from the front underside or out of grilles beside the keyboard. On MacBooks they’re beside the keyboard (Pro) or under the hinge (Air).
- Tilt the laptop so the grilles face down where possible.
- Run Deep Clean for dust or Water Eject after a spill.
- Brush the grilles gently with a soft, dry brush and wipe away what comes out.
Spilled liquid on your laptop?
Act fast: shut it down and unplug it immediately, remove any accessories, and turn it upside down in a tent shape to drain. Leave it off for at least 24–48 hours. Sound can only clear liquid from the speaker grille — it can’t dry the motherboard or keyboard. Sugary drinks leave sticky residue and should be seen by a repair technician.
Laptop speakers muffled or quiet? Check settings first
- Windows 11: Settings → System → Sound → choose the right output (built-in Speakers, not a monitor or headset). Under Properties, turn off “Audio enhancements” to test, and check that Balance is even.
- Windows: Run the “Audio” troubleshooter in Settings → System → Troubleshoot, and update audio drivers (Realtek, Intel SST, etc.).
- macOS: System Settings → Sound → Output → select MacBook Speakers and check the balance slider.
- Apps: check the in-app volume of Spotify, YouTube or Zoom.
Test your laptop speakers
Use the left/right speaker test to check both sides and the frequency sweep test to spot buzzes or dead frequencies. Laptop speakers naturally cut off below about 100–200 Hz, so a lack of deep bass is normal.

Frequently asked questions
How do I clean my laptop speakers?
Run a sound-based Deep Clean with the grilles facing down, then brush them with a soft dry brush. Avoid liquids and do not push anything through the grille.
Why do my laptop speakers sound muffled?
Dust in the grille, audio enhancements, the wrong output device, outdated drivers or a blown driver. Check settings first, then clean and test.
Can I use compressed air on laptop speakers?
Only in short bursts from a distance, at an angle. Close-range blasts can damage the speaker membrane or push dust deeper.
