Most "broken" phone speakers aren't broken. Work through these ten fixes in order — from a 10-second setting check to cleaning, water ejection and knowing when it really needs a repair.

1. Check volume, silent mode and Do Not Disturb

Media volume, ringer volume and call volume are separate. Press volume up while music is playing. On iPhone, turn off Silent mode; on Android, turn off Do Not Disturb and check “Media” in the volume panel.

2. Disconnect Bluetooth

Audio may be going to earbuds, a car or a speaker in another room. Turn Bluetooth off and test again.

3. Restart the phone

A frozen audio service causes silent speakers more often than hardware does. A restart clears it.

4. Remove the case and screen protector

Poorly-fitting cases cover the bottom grille; thick screen protectors can block the earpiece slot.

5. Eject water

If the problem started after rain, a shower, a pool or a spill, there’s water in the grille. Play the water eject sound with the speaker facing down, 2–3 times, and let the phone air-dry.

6. Run a deep clean cycle

For gradual muffling, use the speaker dust cleaner (Deep Clean mode). Its vibration loosens dust and lint sitting on the mesh.

7. Clean the grille by hand

Brush the speaker holes with a soft, dry toothbrush and lift lint with painter’s tape. Never use pins or compressed air. Detailed guides: iPhone, Samsung, any phone.

8. Fix quiet calls (earpiece)

Raise volume during a call, clean the earpiece slot, and check accessibility settings like balance and noise cancellation. See the earpiece speaker cleaner.

9. Check software

  • Update iOS or Android.
  • Turn off sound “enhancers”, equalizers, and third-party volume booster apps.
  • Check Accessibility → Audio for mono audio and balance.
  • Boot Android into Safe Mode to rule out an app.

10. Test for hardware damage

Run the blown speaker test and the left/right speaker test. Crackling at every frequency, even at low volume, or one side completely dead, means the speaker module is damaged. Replacement is usually inexpensive and quick at a repair shop.

Frequently asked questions

How can I fix my phone speaker at home?

Check volume and Bluetooth, restart, remove the case, then run a water eject or deep clean sound and gently brush the grille. Most problems are solved by these steps.

How do I know if my phone speaker is broken?

If it crackles at every frequency even at low volume, or produces no sound after a restart with Bluetooth off, it is probably damaged.

How much does it cost to fix a phone speaker?

A bottom speaker replacement is usually one of the cheaper phone repairs. Prices vary by model and country, so get a quote from an authorised repair shop.
