Mic Test: Check Your Microphone Online
Is your microphone working? Press start, allow access and speak. The live meter shows your input level, and you can record a short clip to hear how you sound.
How to test your microphone
- Click Start mic test and choose Allow when your browser asks for microphone access.
- Speak normally. The meter should move and the status should turn to a green check.
- Click Record 5 s, say a sentence, then Play back to hear how you sound.
- If you have more than one microphone (for example a headset and a built-in mic), choose it in Input device.
Understanding the level meter
- Below −60 dBFS — silence or a muted / blocked microphone.
- −50 to −20 dBFS — normal speaking voice. Ideal for calls and recordings.
- Above −6 dBFS — very loud; you may clip and sound distorted. Move back or lower the input gain.
Microphone not working? Try these fixes
- Check browser permission. Click the lock or settings icon next to the address bar and set Microphone to Allow, then reload.
- Check system privacy settings. Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone. macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. Make sure your browser is allowed.
- Pick the right input. Headsets, webcams and Bluetooth earbuds each add a separate mic.
- Close other apps that may be using the mic (Zoom, Teams, Discord).
- Clean the mic hole. On phones, the mic is a tiny hole next to the charging port or speaker grille and easily fills with lint. A soft dry toothbrush works; see how to clean dust and lint from a phone.
- Water in the mic? Muffled recordings after rain or a spill usually clear as the phone dries. Run the water eject sound for the speaker, keep the phone mic-side down, and test again later.
Is this mic test private?
Yes. The microphone signal is analysed inside your browser using the Web Audio API. Nothing is uploaded, stored or sent to a server, and the 5-second recording only exists in memory until you close or reload the page.
