Does the Water Eject Sound Actually Work? What Happens Inside Your Speaker

Yes — for loose water sitting in the speaker chamber, a low-frequency tone physically pumps it out. Here is what actually happens, what to expect, and the cases where no sound will help.

The short answer

Yes, it works — with two important qualifications. A water eject sound removes loose water that is sitting in the speaker chamber and clinging to the grille. It does not remove water that has travelled deeper into the phone, and it cannot undo corrosion or residue that has already formed. If your speaker went muffled after a splash, a shower, a rainy walk or a quick dunk, and the phone otherwise works normally, the odds are strongly in your favour.

This is not folklore in the way rice is. The technique is built into products from the biggest manufacturers: Apple Watch has had a Water Lock feature since Series 2 that ejects water with a tone, and Samsung ships a water eject routine inside Samsung Members. What is actually happening inside the speaker

A phone speaker is a tiny diaphragm behind a metal mesh with openings measured in tens of microns. When water gets in, a droplet bridges those openings and is held there by surface tension — the same force that lets a drop sit on a leaf without running off. At that scale surface tension is strong, which is why tapping the phone or leaving it on a shelf often does nothing.

The tone gives the diaphragm a job. At 165 Hz the cone moves back and forth 165 times a second and, at high volume, travels close to its maximum excursion. Each stroke pushes a small volume of air out through the mesh with real momentum. Air carries the droplet with it, the droplet deforms, loses its grip on the mesh, and gravity finishes the job — which is the reason every guide tells you to point the speaker down.

Low frequencies are used because excursion falls as pitch rises. At the same volume, a 165 Hz tone can travel around ten times as far per cycle as a 1.6 kHz tone. Music does not work because it spends almost all of its energy above that range. What you should see and hear when it is working

Run a cycle with the phone speaker-down on a dry cloth and watch the grille. In the first ten to twenty seconds of a genuinely wet speaker you will usually see fine beads of water appear on the mesh, and sometimes a small dark patch spreading on the cloth. That is the water being pumped out.

Listen as well. A wet speaker gives the tone a wet, fluttering or rattling edge. As the chamber clears, the tone tightens up and sounds clean. That change is often a more reliable signal than what you can see, because the smallest droplets never show on the surface.

  • After one cycle: obvious improvement on a splash or light rain; possibly still a little dull.
  • After two or three cycles with the grille wiped dry between them: normal volume on most rain, shower, sweat and sink incidents.
  • No visible water and no change in the tone after three cycles: the problem is probably not water in the speaker chamber. Move on to the checks below.

When it works best

Timing matters more than anything else. Fresh water that went in within the last few hours comes out easily. Water that has been sitting for a day starts leaving mineral residue as it evaporates, and salt or sugar residue never leaves on its own.

It also works best when the liquid was clean. Rain, tap water, sweat and shower spray are the easy cases. Pool water and sea water need a brief rinse with clean fresh water first, because chlorine and salt crystallise inside the mesh and corrode the contacts around the port. Coffee, juice and fizzy drinks are the hardest: the sugar dries into a film that glues the diaphragm, and no tone can dissolve it.

Finally, it works best on a phone that is otherwise behaving. If the screen is flickering, the phone is rebooting or the charging alert will not clear after hours, water has gone past the speaker and the speaker is the least of your problems. When it does not work, and why

When people report that the sound did nothing, it is almost always one of the following. Check them in order before concluding the speaker is damaged.

  • The tone is not coming out of the wet speaker. Bluetooth is still connected to earbuds, a car or a TV, so the phone speaker never moved. Turn Bluetooth off and run it again.
  • The volume is too low. Ejection depends on full excursion. At half volume the droplets just wobble. Media volume to maximum, not the ringer.
  • The case is still on. A case lip over the grille traps the droplet exactly where it started and muffles the pressure wave.
  • The wrong speaker. Most phones have two — the bottom loudspeaker and the earpiece slot. Water in the earpiece needs the phone tilted face-down so the slot drains, and a longer run, because the earpiece is a much smaller driver.
  • The problem is lint, not water. If the audio declined slowly over weeks, run the deep clean cycle instead and read how to clean dust and lint out of a phone speaker.
  • The water has already left residue. Salt, chlorine and sugar leave a crust that sound cannot move. That needs a professional clean.
  • Hardware is damaged. A dead channel, buzzing at low volume, or distortion that gets worse as you turn it up points at the voice coil or a corroded connector, and it needs a service centre, not a tone.

Is it safe? Can the sound damage the speaker?

The tones used sit inside the normal playback range of any phone speaker. Your phone reproduces 165 Hz every time a bass line plays, and 6 kHz every time someone pronounces an s. What damages speakers is sustained clipping distortion, physical impact, and driving an already damaged coil hard for minutes at a time.

Two sensible limits. Run cycles of 30 to 60 seconds with short rests rather than a continuous ten-minute blast, and stop if you hear crackling, buzzing or distortion that does not improve after a couple of cycles — at that point the driver is already damaged and repeating the tone will not help. And protect your own ears: the tone is loud by design, so keep the phone away from your face and never run a cycle with the earpiece pressed to your ear.

Sound versus the other methods

Rice does not pull water out of a speaker chamber; it absorbs ambient humidity far slower than open air and sheds starch dust into the grille. A hairdryer pushes warm damp air deeper and can soften the adhesive around the display. Shaking the phone hard spreads liquid towards the logic board. A vacuum cleaner can over-extend a diaphragm designed to move a fraction of a millimetre.

The combination that actually works is the one manufacturers use: eject the loose water with a low-frequency tone, blot the outside, then let airflow — or a sealed bag with silica gel — deal with the residual humidity over a few hours. How to get the best result in two minutes

If you have read this far with a wet phone in your other hand, here is the routine that gives the tone its best chance.

  • Take the case off and blot the grille with a lint-free cloth. Dab, do not rub.
  • Turn Bluetooth off and set media volume to maximum.
  • Rest the phone with the wet speaker facing straight down on a dry cloth.

  • Dry the mesh, then go again. If the sound has improved but still lacks sparkle, switch to the sweep.
  • Confirm with the channel tester: a clean 440 Hz and 6 kHz tone on each side means the chamber is clear.
