Bluetooth Speaker Cleaner: Fix a Wet or Muffled JBL
Pool parties, beach days and rain all end the same way: a muffled Bluetooth speaker. Connect it, play the water eject sound below and follow the drying steps.
How to get water out of a Bluetooth speaker
- Turn it off and close or check the port cover. Don’t charge it while wet.
- Shake it gently with the passive radiators and grille facing down.
- Turn it on, connect it via Bluetooth and set your phone volume to about 70%.
- Play Water Eject above with the speaker grille pointing down. On speakers like the JBL Flip and Charge you’ll see the passive radiators on the ends flap and spit out water.
- Let it dry for a few hours in a ventilated spot, then charge once the port is completely dry.
Waterproof doesn’t mean “water-free”
Many speakers are rated IP67 (JBL Flip, Charge, Clip; UE Boom; Bose SoundLink Flex; Sony ULT Field), which means they survive submersion to 1 metre for 30 minutes. The electronics are sealed, but water still sits behind the fabric grille and on the driver, muffling sound until it drains. That’s exactly what the water eject sound clears. Salt or chlorinated water should be rinsed off with fresh water first.
Bluetooth speaker sounds muffled but not wet?
- Dust and sand in the grille — vacuum gently through the fabric with a brush attachment, then run Deep Clean.
- Bluetooth codec or interference — move closer, disconnect other devices, and turn off battery-saver modes.
- EQ settings — check the speaker’s companion app (JBL Portable, Bose, Sony Music Center) for an EQ preset.
- Damaged driver — run the bass test and blown speaker test to check for distortion.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get water out of my JBL speaker?
Turn it off, shake it grille-down, then reconnect and play the water eject sound with the grille facing down. Let it dry before charging.
Can I charge a wet Bluetooth speaker?
No. Wait until the charging port is completely dry, usually a few hours, to avoid corrosion and short circuits.
Why does my waterproof speaker sound muffled after swimming?
Water is trapped behind the grille and on the driver. The water eject sound and some drying time usually restore normal sound.
