Phone Speaker Crackling? Causes and How to Fix It
Crackling and buzzing from a phone speaker usually come from water, debris or software, not a blown speaker. Here is how to work out which one you have and fix it.
7 causes of a crackling phone speaker
1. Water in the speaker
The most common cause after rain, a shower or a spill. Water on the speaker membrane makes a sputtering, crackly sound, especially on bass. Fix: play the water eject sound 2–3 times with the speaker facing down, then let the phone air-dry.
2. Dust, sand or lint on the mesh
Particles vibrate against the grille and buzz. Fix: brush gently with a soft toothbrush, lift with tape, and run the dust cleaner.
3. Volume too high for the content
Bass-heavy music at maximum volume overdrives small phone speakers. Fix: drop the volume by two steps. If the crackle disappears, the speaker is simply at its limit — that’s normal.
4. Sound enhancers and EQ
Dolby Atmos, “bass boost”, app equalizers and volume-booster apps can push the signal into distortion. Fix: turn them off and uninstall volume boosters.
5. Bad source or Bluetooth glitch
A low-quality stream or video can crackle on any device. Fix: test with a different app or track and restart the phone.
6. A loose case, magnet mount or screen protector
Plastic parts touching the speaker area rattle at certain frequencies. Fix: remove accessories and test again.
7. A damaged (blown) speaker
If it crackles at every frequency, even at low volume, the speaker membrane or coil may be damaged — often after a drop, long water exposure or overdriving. Fix: confirm with the blown speaker test; replacement is usually quick and affordable.
Is your speaker blown or just dirty?
Run our free blown speaker sweep and compare it with the checklist.
Run the blown speaker test →How to diagnose it in two minutes
- Remove the case and lower the volume to 50%. Still crackling? It’s not just overdriving.
- Run the frequency sweep test. Crackle at only a few low frequencies suggests water, debris or a rattle. Crackle everywhere suggests damage.
- Run water eject + deep clean, then test again.
- Compare the earpiece and bottom speaker with the left/right test.
Crackling only during calls?
That’s often network-related (poor signal, Wi-Fi calling) rather than the speaker. Try a call on a different network. If the earpiece crackles on media too, clean it — see the earpiece speaker cleaner.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my phone speaker crackling at high volume?
Small phone speakers distort when pushed past their limit, especially with bass-heavy content or sound enhancers on. Lower the volume slightly and switch off bass boost.
Can water make a phone speaker crackle?
Yes. Water on the speaker membrane causes crackling and muffled sound. A water eject sound and air-drying usually fix it.
Is a crackling speaker blown?
Not necessarily. If it crackles at all volumes and frequencies after cleaning and drying, it may be damaged. Otherwise it is usually water, dust or software.
