Liquid Detected in Lightning Connector: What It Means and How to Fix It
What the iPhone liquid detection alert means, how to dry the Lightning or USB-C port the way Apple recommends, whether Emergency Override is safe, and how to fix false alerts when the phone was never wet.
What does “Liquid Detected in Lightning Connector” mean?
Since the iPhone XS and XR, iPhones can sense moisture between the pins of the charging port. When you plug in a cable or accessory and the port is wet, iOS shows one of these alerts:
- “Liquid Detected in Lightning Connector” (iPhone XS to iPhone 14)
- “Liquid Detected in USB-C Connector” (iPhone 15 and later)
- “Charging Not Available — Liquid has been detected in the Lightning connector”
The phone stops wired charging and data transfer until the port is dry. It’s a safety feature: running current through wet pins can corrode the connector and the cable, and in rare cases cause a short circuit. Your iPhone is not broken — it is protecting itself.
How to fix it: Apple’s recommended steps
- Unplug the cable or accessory from your iPhone and from the power adapter.
- Tap the iPhone gently against your hand with the connector facing down to remove excess liquid.
- Leave it in a dry area with some airflow. A spot near (not in front of) a fan is ideal.
- Wait at least 30 minutes, then try charging again with your cable.
- If the alert appears again, there is still liquid in the port or under the pins. Leave the iPhone to dry for up to a day, then try again.
You can keep using your iPhone normally while it dries, and you can charge it wirelessly with a MagSafe or Qi charger — the alert only blocks the wired port.
What NOT to do
- Don’t put your iPhone in rice. Apple specifically warns against it; small rice particles and starch can get into the port. See does putting your phone in rice work?
- Don’t use heat — no hair dryers, radiators or ovens.
- Don’t use compressed air or blow into the port.
- Don’t insert cotton swabs, paper towels, toothpicks or SIM pins.
Should you use Emergency Override?
The alert includes an Emergency Override option that lets you charge anyway. Use it only in a genuine emergency, when you need power and have no wireless charger. Charging with liquid in the port can damage the iPhone and the cable, and the damage isn’t always covered by warranty. If you do override, unplug as soon as you have enough charge.
Speaker sounds muffled too?
If water got into the port, it probably reached the speaker grille next to it. While the port dries, play the free iPhone water eject sound with the speaker facing down — it pushes water out of the speaker mesh and makes the drying process faster.

False alerts happen. Common causes:
- Humidity or condensation — after a shower in the bathroom, or moving from a cold car into a warm room. Wait 30–60 minutes.
- Sweat — phones carried in a pocket during exercise.
- Lint and debris in the port can hold moisture or bridge the pins. Gently clean the port — see how to clean a charging port safely.
- A damaged or non-certified cable/accessory — try a different, MFi-certified or Apple USB-C cable.
- Corroded pins from earlier water exposure — look for green or dark residue with a flashlight. This needs a repair.
Also restart your iPhone (hold side button + volume up, then slide to power off) and update iOS; a software glitch occasionally triggers repeated alerts.
How long does it take for liquid to clear?
Usually 30 minutes to a few hours. Salt water, pool water or sugary drinks leave residue that keeps triggering the sensor; rinse the port gently with a little fresh water, shake it out and dry again. If the alert persists after 24 hours of drying, have the port inspected by Apple or a repair shop.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get rid of “Liquid Detected in Lightning Connector”?
Unplug everything, tap the iPhone gently with the port facing down, and leave it to dry in a place with airflow. Try charging again after 30 minutes; if the alert returns, wait up to a day.
Is it safe to use Emergency Override?
Only in a real emergency. Charging with liquid in the port can damage the connector and cable. Use wireless charging instead if you can.
Can I charge my iPhone wirelessly when liquid is detected?
Yes. MagSafe and Qi wireless charging still work because they do not use the wet port.
Why does my iPhone say liquid detected when it isn’t wet?
Humidity, sweat, lint in the port, a faulty cable or corrosion. Wait, clean the port gently, and try another cable.
