Phone Speaker Not Working? How to Get Sound Back

No sound at all from your phone? Before booking a repair, work through these checks. Most "dead" speakers are a setting, a stuck headphone mode or water.

Quick checks (1 minute)

  1. Volume and mode: raise media volume while something is playing. iPhone: turn off Silent mode. Android: turn off Do Not Disturb.
  2. Bluetooth off: audio may be routed to earbuds or a car.
  3. Restart the phone.
  4. Try another app — if YouTube works but one app doesn’t, it’s the app.

Is your phone stuck in headphone mode?

If the volume panel shows a headphone icon with nothing plugged in, the phone thinks headphones are connected. Common after water or lint gets into a 3.5 mm jack or USB-C port.

Speaker silent after getting wet?

Heavy water can fully block sound until it drains. Point the speaker down, play the water eject sound 2–3 times and leave the phone to air-dry for a few hours.

Got wet recently?

Play the free water eject sound with the speaker facing down to clear blocked grilles.

Software checks

  • Update iOS or Android.
  • Accessibility: check balance isn’t fully to one side and Mono Audio is set correctly.
  • Android Safe Mode: if sound works in Safe Mode, a third-party app is the cause.
  • Reset settings (iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Reset → Reset All Settings) — this doesn’t delete your data.

Hardware test

Run the speaker test and blown speaker test. If the speaker is silent with Bluetooth off, after a restart and an update — and headphones work — the speaker or its connector has likely failed. A repair shop can replace the speaker module, usually within an hour.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no sound coming from my phone speaker?

Usually silent mode, Bluetooth routing, a stuck headphone mode or a software glitch. Less often water or a failed speaker.

How do I get my phone out of headphone mode?

Plug and unplug headphones a few times, clean and dry the port, and restart the phone.

How do I know if my phone speaker is broken?

If there is still no sound after a restart, with Bluetooth off and updated software, but headphones work, the speaker likely needs replacing.
