iPhone Speaker Not Working? 11 Fixes for No Sound or Low Volume

No sound from your iPhone, or the volume buttons don't seem to do anything? Work through these 11 fixes in order — most iPhones are back to normal by step 6.

1. Turn off Silent mode

Silent mode mutes ringtones and many app sounds. On iPhones with a Ring/Silent switch, flip it so no orange shows. On iPhone 15 Pro and later, press the Action button (if it’s set to Silent) or toggle Silent Mode in Control Center.

2. Check the right volume

iPhone has separate volumes: media (adjusted while something is playing), Ringtone and Alerts (Settings → Sounds & Haptics) and call volume (adjusted during a call). Raise the one for the sound you’re missing.

3. Disconnect Bluetooth and AirPlay

Swipe into Control Center and long-press the audio card. If AirPods, a car, a HomePod or an AirPlay TV is selected, switch output to iPhone, or turn Bluetooth off to test.

4. Is it stuck in headphone mode?

If the volume indicator shows a headphone icon with nothing connected, lint or moisture in the Lightning/USB-C port may be fooling it. Clean the port gently with a wooden toothpick (phone off) — see how to clean a charging port — and restart.

5. Restart your iPhone

Press and hold the side button and either volume button, slide to power off, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on. This clears stuck audio services more often than you’d expect.

6. Eject water from the speaker

Muffled, crackly or silent after rain, a shower or a spill? Water in the grille blocks sound. Open the iPhone water eject tool in Safari, turn Silent mode off, point the speaker down and play Water Eject 2–3 times.

7. Clean the speaker grille

Gradual muffling is usually dust and lint. Brush with a soft dry toothbrush, lift lint with painter’s tape and run Deep Clean. Step by step: how to clean iPhone speakers.

8. Check accessibility audio settings

  • Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual → Balance: center it.
  • Mono Audio: toggle to compare.
  • Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Call Audio Routing: set to Automatic.
  • Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Headphone Safety: Reduce Loud Audio only affects headphones, but check it if sound is quiet through AirPods.

9. Update iOS and reset settings

Install updates in Settings → General → Software Update. If sound is still missing, try Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings. This resets preferences but doesn’t delete your data.

10. Test which speaker is failing

iPhone 7 and later use two speakers. Play music in landscape and use the left/right speaker test: one side is the bottom speaker, the other the earpiece. Then run the blown speaker test for crackling. If only calls are quiet, see iPhone ear speaker not working.

11. Get it repaired

If there’s no sound after all of the above while headphones work fine, the speaker module or its connection has likely failed. Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple’s Self Service Repair program can replace it. The bottom speaker is one of the simpler iPhone repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no sound on my iPhone?

Usually Silent mode, Bluetooth or AirPlay routing, a stuck headphone mode or a low volume setting. Check those, restart, then clean the speaker.

Why does my iPhone speaker sound muffled?

Water or dust in the speaker grille. Play a water eject sound with the speaker facing down, then brush the grille gently.

How do I know if my iPhone speaker is broken?

If there is no sound or constant crackling after restarting, updating and cleaning, while headphones work, the speaker probably needs replacement.
