iPad Speaker Cleaner: Remove Water & Dust
iPads have two or four speakers along their edges, and they fill with dust and crumbs over time. Run the cleaner below, then use the speaker test to check every grille.
How to clean iPad speakers with sound
- Open this page in Safari, turn off silent mode and raise the volume to maximum.
- Remove the case or keyboard folio.
- Hold the iPad so the speaker grilles you want to clean face downwards. On iPad Pro and iPad Air, speakers sit on both short edges; on most standard iPads they are on the bottom edge beside the port.
- Run Water Eject for water or Deep Clean for dust, then flip the iPad to clean the other edge.
Test every speaker afterwards
Rotate the iPad to landscape and use the left/right speaker test. iPads automatically re-assign left and right as you rotate them, so each edge should play its own side. A quiet edge points to a blocked grille.
Clean iPad speaker grilles by hand
- Use a soft, dry brush along the row of holes.
- Press painter’s tape or Blu Tack on and peel off to lift crumbs and lint.
- Do not use compressed air at close range or push anything into the holes.
iPad got wet?
Unlike recent iPhones, iPads have no official water-resistance rating. If liquid got inside — not just on the grille — power it off, let it dry for at least 24 hours and contact Apple or a repair shop if it misbehaves. Sound can clear water from the speaker mesh, but it cannot dry internal electronics.
Frequently asked questions
How do I clean my iPad speakers?
Run the Deep Clean cycle with the speaker edge facing down, then brush the grilles gently with a soft dry brush and lift loose dust with tape.
Is the iPad waterproof?
No. iPads do not have an IP water-resistance rating, so treat any spill seriously and let the device dry fully before charging.
Why is only one side of my iPad loud?
One edge’s grille may be blocked, or balance may be off-center. Clean the quiet side and check Settings → Accessibility → Audio/Visual → Balance.
